SLED to Unveil Statewide Gang Database
By Maya Nesbit
Director Reggie Lloyd will unveil the new state gang database known as
SCGangNET at this year’s Gangs Across The Carolina’s conference hosted
by the South Carolina Gang Investigators Association.
The conference is scheduled for Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Hyatt
Hotel and Convention Center in downtown Greenville, S.C.
SCGangNET is a web-based program developed by SRA International, Inc.
and tracks criminal gangs including their associates and the crimes they
commit across the state.
The program also identifies gang trends and patterns to reduce gang
crimes in an effort to safeguard South Carolina residents.
The information gathered for SCGangNET is entered into the on-line
system by various law enforcement partners to help other agencies learn
more about gang crimes and activities.
Director Lloyd says, “This technology is another valuable tool that will
help the law enforcement family to gather more gang intelligence.
GangNET is a resource that sends a strong message to street gangs that
we’re continuing our crackdown on their violence.”
SCGangNet is fully funded by federal grants totaling more than $531,000.
Additionally, SCGangNET will be maintained by SLED and specifically used
by the agency’s Gang Intelligence Team, which prevents and combats
criminal gang activity across South Carolina.
The team is currently utilizing this program and will train other law
enforcement partners on how to use the database.
In the future SLED hopes to share this gang intelligence with law
enforcement agencies along the Interstate-95 corridor.
North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland have already expressed an interest
in this program.
