La. Highway Safety Commission announces availability of grants
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission announced Thursday that it is accepting grant proposals through May 1, 2009 for projects designed to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes leading to injury and death on state highways.
The grants are being offered to local communities, organizations and individuals to better enable them to implement effective strategies to address the traffic safety problems that cause injury and death. Officials have identified impaired driving, lack of safety belt use and aggressive driving/speed as being among Louisiana’s most severe traffic safety problems.
The LHSC has identified and created a list of the parishes that present the highest risks for fatal and injury crashes. The list also identifies the parishes that rank high for alcohol-related fatal and injury crashes, high for motorcycle crashes, and below average for seat belt usage.
The LHSC also supports the Safe Communities program, which expands resources and partnerships, increases program visibility, and establishes community ownership and support for transportation injury prevention programs.
“The grants are designed to get local communities more directly involved in reducing the number of crashes that result in death or injuries,” said Lt. Col. John LeBlanc, executive director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
The LHSC assembled an information packet to assist organizations, agencies and individuals in drafting grant proposals. Those interested in submitting additional information about the grants and obtaining an information packet can do so at www.dps.state.la.us/tiger or by calling (225) 925-6991.
