Portland City Council Refers Motorcycle Noise Ordinance Back To Committee

Ordinance Sponsor Says It Would Only Affect Abnormally Loud Motorcycles

PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland City Council sent a motorcycle noise ordinance back to the Public Safety Committee.Council members discussed the issue for close to two hours Wednesday night at a public hearing.Councilor Dan Skolnik, who sponsored the ordinance, said he wants to try to reduce the noise abnormally loud motorcycles make. The ordinance would enforce the federal law that all motorcycles made after Dec. 31, 1982, must have mufflers with an EPA exhaust system label, certifying the mufflers meet EPA standards.Critics of the ordinance say enacting the ordinance could cost the city tourism dollars if motorcyclists decide not to ride to Portland. The Public Safety Committee is expected to take up the issue on Oct. 13.
