NHTSA 2010-2015 plan comments 11/25

[Some of the comments]

I would like to make some suggestions for the NHTSA to help it better serve the country for the public good. 1. Traffic studies should be done to improve traffic flow. Traffic lights should be coordinated in all cities to reduce the effect of stopping/starting at every other light. Madison, WI is an excellent example of coordinated traffic lights. Additionally, intersections with stop signs should be reviewed to determine if they could be replaced with yield signs. Some useless speed bumps should be identified and removed. The result would be less fuel consumption and a stronger economy because less time would need to be wasted sitting in traffic. 2. Distracted driving laws (cell phones, texting, etc) should be banned. We already have laws that deal with people that cause damage to property and human life. 3. All police roadblocks for all reasons (safety checks, equipment checks, DUI/DWI checks, etc) should be banned in accordance with the 4th amendment. The Supreme Court got it wrong in Michigan v. Sitz (1990). 4. All levels of government should be prohibited from imposing fines on any and all traffic tickets. Instead, only a demerit-points system should be used. We need our governments to focus on safety instead of profits through fines. We also need our police officers going after the real criminals instead of people speeding on the Interstate when those people are just going with the normal flow of traffic.

Take the money being given to states to fund enforcement binges and instead give it to communities to synchronize their traffic lights. No more roadblocks! Instead of wasting money on speed enforcement, devote those funds to setting higher, more reasonable speed limits. Rather than hand out money for ticket cameras use those same funds to systematically implement realistic yellow light intervals and correct other intersection engineering flaws.

The ability of individual cities and towns to arbitrary set unrealistic speed limits and traffic signal timings is a failure of NHTSA to enforce the regulations of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. This has allowed and also encouraged the decay of traffic safety in this country. While traffic deaths have been reduced it is mainly due to automotive engineering improvements. The lapse in rule enforcement is induced by special interest groups visa vi insurance companies, camera enforcement and their special interest groups which influence legislation. Proper traffic engineering practices have been abandoned for profits.

Citizens are being targeted for search and seizure to fill city coffers and employees pockets. We all need safety on the roads, and when good citizens are targeted because they can pay tickets, then our government is at fault. This has to change. Do we really want to become a country that allows this power to overtake us? Most people see it happening and are afraid to say anything for fear of retribution. We want to believe our governing bodies will be fair to us, but it is becoming obvious that we are losing our ability to influence our own government for the right thing. Take the money being given to states to fund enforcement binges and instead give it to communities to synchronize their traffic lights. Instead of wasting money on speed enforcement, devote those funds to setting higher, more reasonable speed limits instead of 25 MPH where few cars can maintain this limit! And, rather than hand out money for ticket cameras use those same funds to systematically implement realistic yellow light intervals and correct other intersection engineering flaws. Use cameras to find violent criminals. Enforce the laws in place that regulate how much money from traffic tickets can be legally used for city projects and roads. Police and constables are illegally stalking innocent citizens I know who do their best to follow laws and live honest lives who also happen to have money to fight their case and give money to the courts which in turn is used to fund city services way beyond the legal stipulation. Prosecute the illegals here who commit heineous crimes without punishment and are set free. A very unstable environment is being set up and there may be a point where no one can gain control of it. I pray for our country and governments, but we too, must do something positive to prevent our own internal combustion. The power hungry have no place as leaders because they do nothing, but aid those who wish to see us fail. Please help.

As a citizen of the US and a motorcyclist, I would like to see state agencies funded to improve driver education dramatically. Also, road improvements are required for all users. This would include adjusting speed limits to reflect the 85th percentile speeds, and re-engineering intersections to reduce or eliminate red-light-running. As public transportation outside of dense, urban areas simply is not feasible, money needs to stop being wasted on these programs, and instead used for road and highway repairs and improvements. Thank you.
