Current Law Tickets Child For Not Wearing Helmet

TOPEKA, Kan. — A bill before the Kansas Senate would require adults to be sure minors are wearing helmets while driving or riding a motorcycle. It’s already illegal in Kansas for anyone under 18 to drive or ride a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. But currently it’s the child who gets a ticket.Under the new bill, any adult who lets a child onto a cycle without a helmet would also get ticketed. The Governors Highway Safety Association said 43 of the 64 riders killed in motorcycle crashes in 2006 in Kansas weren’t wearing helmets.
